The Victory Gardens of WWI and WWII were the result of duty felt by the free world to help their families and their nations by becoming more self-sufficient.  During those challenging times, even the smallest parcels of land were devoted to providing as much food as possible.  Today, we are once again seeing a desire for a lifestyle marked by a greater sense of self-sufficiency.  Food security, resource conservation, buying local, and knowing where food comes from are all becoming important goals of the 21st century.

In the spirit of the Victory Gardens of yesterday, the Victory Egg Garden is designed for today’s suburban backyard.  Using raised bed, square foot, successive-planting gardening, the Victory Egg Garden can help even a beginning farmer get up to 80% yield increases per square foot while working, watering, weeding, and fertilizing less than traditional gardening.   In addition, our Victory Egg Garden harnesses the power of happy chickens to fertilize one raised bed at a time, automatically turn your compost pile, and produce up to three eggs a day for your family.  All of this fueled by your table scraps, grain, and tender, loving care.

Among the other countless benefits of the Victory Egg Garden, we can include:

WHY RAISED BEDS?

Raised beds allow early warming of soil in the spring, better water drainage for plants, easier bending for the gardener, and easy ways to organize planting spaces into square foot sections.  Because soil isn’t packed from walking on it or working with mechanical equipment, it absorbs and retains water more effectively and makes it easier to collect and discard weeds.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The square foot method of gardening, developed by Mel Bartholomew, allows you to have “an easy, no-work, foolproof, continual-harvest garden method that would work in a small space for beginners and experts alike.”  (Square Foot Gardening, Mel Batholomew, p. 8).  By combining this gardening method with Joel Salatin’s free range chicken concept, you can fertilize the garden, composting waste, eating pests and gain the output of one to two dozen eggs a week.  Each raised bed is a duplicate of the others.  We recommend a minimum of three raised beds, twenty feet long.  An attractive, small structure houses a maximum of four hens with an attached run that perfectly fits atop one raised bed at a time.  By rotating the house and run over the various raised beds, the chickens fertilize, compost, and prepare the soil for your next successive planting.  You can even add a movable greenhouse to a section of raised bed to get an early start on spring or extend your salad crops into the winter.  All this can be accomplished in a small amount of space that is kept organized and attractive in your back yard.
